The Allahabad High Court granted bail to three accused in the Varanasi “Ganga boat Iftar” case after observing that the apology submitted before the Court reflected genuine regret and respect toward religious sentiments linked to Maa Ganga and Hinduism.
Justice Rajiv Lochan Shukla allowed the bail pleas of Danish Saifi, Noor Islam and Amir Kaifi, all of whom had been in custody since March 2026. The prosecution alleged that the accused participated in an Iftar gathering on a boat in the River Ganga and later circulated videos online, allegedly disturbing communal harmony and hurting religious sentiments.
During the hearing, the accused submitted an additional affidavit stating that they held deep respect for all religions, particularly Maa Ganga and Hindu beliefs. They also offered an unconditional apology to those whose sentiments may have been affected and assured the Court that they would avoid any such activity in future.
While opposing bail, the State argued that the incident formed part of a larger attempt to provoke communal tension through social media circulation of the video. However, the Court considered the absence of criminal antecedents, the period already spent in custody, and the fact that similarly placed co-accused had previously received bail.
Observing that the apology appeared sincere and reflected genuine remorse, the Court granted bail subject to conditions including cooperation with trial proceedings, non-interference with evidence, and maintaining public order.
